How to screen capture the desktop with audio using VLC?

As of version 2.2.5, screen capture mode that comes with VLC cannot capture audio. This tutorial will show you how to do screen capture with audio. The ability to capture audio is important if you are trying to record an online presentation. Having the ability to play back later is valuable.

1. First, you need to install VLC version 2.1.3.  This version has been tested to work in this example. Using other versions may not guarantee to work even with the latest version 2.2.5.

2.  Install the screen capture and audio capture software. These can be found using Google.

3.   Run VLC and go to Media->Open Capture Device...

 4. In the Open Media dialog, select the desired values for the capture mode, video, and audio device name selections as shown in the screenshot below.
Once the correct values have been selected, select Stream from the play menu.

5. In the Stream Output dialog, leave the default input source value as dshow and click the Next button

6. In the Destination Setup page, click the add file button and select a filename to be the output file for the stream.
Notice you need to browse to a location where you have writable access. If not, the recording won't work, and there is no way to know why it does not work since VLC won't show any error message.

7. Click Next will go to the Transcoding Options page. Here we will choose to output in AVI format.

8.  Once you are done with the transcoding section, clicking next will go to the last page.
In this page, clicking on the Stream button will start the recording. The recording will capture the desktop as well as audio.
